Christians– do you know what you’re supporting?

A certain Middle Eastern country has been in the news quite often lately. About this nation, evangelical leader John Hagee proclaimed his “unconditional love” and support. Tony Perkins, another religious leader, declared that it has “no greater supporter, ally and friend” than the Christian community.

Do you have any idea what exactly you are supporting? Have you read the latest news? Seen the photos and videos on social media? Each time I check, the situation gets more and more bizarre.

Did you see what the soldiers were doing to prisoners on camera? What about the bombing of those engaged in prayer? Or all the children with gruesome, untreated injuries? As visiting American doctor Mark Perlmutter reported, many of these children have gunshot wounds in the head.

Put yourself in my shoes for a second. Imagine you live next to Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert, a sweet elderly couple with a boarder in the basement whose name is “Cousin Jimmy.” Cousin Jimmy always seemed nice, well-dressed, polite. But lately, scary-looking people have been seen hanging around the Wilberts’ basement, and police cars and ambulances have been showing up in the middle of the night.

What would you say to Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert? Don’t think of this as a lecture, or an accusation. Think of it as your friendly neighbor asking if you know what Cousin Jimmy is doing down there in the basement. When was the last time you checked on him? Because people in the neighborhood are talking.
