How does a cult trap and keep its members? Call it coercion, abuse, or just plain mind control, but they have many techniques for wearing down and breaking the human spirit. Using them, they apply constant pressure and block natural sources of strength, until the victim reaches a point where he can no longer resist the cult’s influence and falls to total submission.

Lately, I’ve noticed something that bothers me. Regular people are behaving like cult members. So when I discovered this list of 26 mind control techniques used by cults, compiled by the CIC, I wondered: are they being used on us? And, more importantly, what then? How would we resist a cult that encompasses all of society?

Collectively, we’re a bit stuck, but individually, we can “flip the script.” We can reclaim our own sanity by doing the opposite of each technique. When the cult tells you to lose sleep, gain sleep. When they tell you to be afraid, be fearless. When they tell you to give up your privacy, enhance your privacy.

Towards a less culty existence! Thanks for reading. -Tyler
